TRUE CONFESSIONS

The Sacrament of Reconciliation * Reconciliation of a Penitent - What is it
From the Good News Letter & the Book of Common Prayer - 4/1/03
What is a Sacrament? - See the Book of Common Prayer page 857.

If you were at church on Sunday, March 23rd, you may remember Fr. Bill asking us that question as well during the sermon. Did you know the answer?

The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given by Christ as sure and certain means by which we receive that grace.

What is Confession of Sin?

A public prayer of penitence at the Eucharist (BCP, pages 330, 360, & 393), the Daily Offices and other times. Also, the Reconciliation of a Penitent (see BCP, page 446).

What is Reconciliation of a Penitent?

Reconciliation, also called "confession", is a service found on page 446 of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. If you are carrying heavy spiritual burdens, consider this sacrament as a means of making peace with God and within yourself. Reconciliation has been part of the Anglican tradition from the earliest days. Much strength for living comes by the unburdening of one's guilt to a fellow human being who can give you the wonderful assurance of God's love and forgiveness. Remember it is God giving the forgiveness, the priest is the vessel that conveys it.

The following is from the Book of Common Prayer concerning this rite:

The ministry of reconciliation, which has been committed by Christ to his Church, is exercised through the care each Christian has for others, through the common prayer of Christians assembled for public worship, and through the priesthood of Christ and his ministers declaring absolution. The Reconciliation of a Penitent is available for all who desire it. It is not restricted to times of sickness. Confessions may be heard anytime and anywhere. The content of a confession is not normally a matter of subsequent discussion. The secrecy of a confession is morally absolute for the confessor, and must under no circumstances be broken.

When & Where is this Sacrament Available?

Basically, almost anytime & anywhere. It is available for all who desire it. During Holy Week we set aside time for those who would like to receive. On Maundy Thursday from 7:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., on Good Friday by appointment, and always it is available by appointment as well. Call Fr. Bill at church (728-5292) to make an appointment.
